Direct Support Professional (DSP)

As a DSP, you help individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) live safer, fuller, more independent lives. This job is part care, part coaching, part consistency. If you show up, follow a plan, and respect people, you will do well here.

Location: Canton, Ohio · Schedule: Full-time / Part-time (varies by assignment)

What you’ll do

DSP work is person-centered. You support people in ways that match their goals, preferences, and approved plan. Specific tasks vary by program and individual needs.

Daily Living Support
Assistance with routines like hygiene, meal prep, housekeeping, organization, and skill-building (as authorized).
Community & Independence
Support in community settings: appointments, errands, social activities, job coaching support, and independent living skills.
Safety & Documentation
Follow safety plans, observe and report concerns, complete required documentation, and communicate with supervisors per policy.

Minimum qualifications (state-standard friendly)

Applicants must be able to meet required provider and state compliance standards for IDD support services. Requirements may vary by program and funding source, but commonly include:

  • Age: 18+ (or as required by assignment)
  • Education: High school diploma/GED preferred
  • Background checks: Must pass required criminal background checks per state and provider policy
  • Identification: Valid government-issued ID and eligibility to work in the U.S.
  • Transportation: Reliable transportation to/from shifts and ability to travel locally
  • Driver requirements (if applicable): Valid driver’s license, acceptable driving record, proof of insurance
  • Training: Ability to complete required onboarding and ongoing trainings within required timeframes
  • Communication: Ability to read, write, and document services clearly
Important: This role requires professional boundaries. You will support individuals respectfully, follow plans, and document what you do. Consistency matters more than charisma.

Required training

  • Orientation + person-centered practices
  • Rights, privacy, and reporting requirements
  • Abuse/neglect recognition and reporting
  • CPR/First Aid
  • Medication assistance training (only if assigned/authorized)
  • Behavior support plan training (as applicable)

Work expectations

  • Arrive on time and complete assigned shift duties
  • Follow individualized service plans and supervisor direction
  • Maintain confidentiality (HIPAA-aligned practices)
  • Accurately document services provided
  • Report incidents and concerns per policy

Physical demands & work environment

Work may be in homes and community settings. Depending on assignment, the role may require standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 50 lbs, and supporting individuals with mobility needs. Reasonable accommodations may be available consistent with applicable law.
